From here I saw what happened and I cried

http://carriemaeweems.net/index.html

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to spend the day at the Getty Museum. A beautiful place not only filled with paintings, drawings, photographs, etc, but also appeared to be art itself. Contemporary architecture with exotic trees, while what could have appeared as a stone cold building was lightened by greenery. Everywhere you looked was the perfect balance of art and nature.

The one exhibit that moved me the most was Carrie Mae Weems ‘From here I saw what happened and I cried’. A beautiful collection of photographs of African Americans and how they were, and sometimes still are, perceived through white culture. It was the first time I truly felt meaning looking at a photograph. I cried.

Feeling so moved and inspired, I googled Mrs. Weems as soon as I got home. Looking through her website and timeline only added spark to my motivation. From what I gather, everyone has a path, everyone has struggles, but when you use those faults to inspire and guide you in a creative way you can come up with something beautiful.
